Summer Jewelry Care 101: Keep Your Sparkle All Season (and Hauser’s Summer Camp for Jewelry!)

Summer Jewelry Care 101: Keep Your Sparkle All Season (and Hauser’s Summer Camp for Jewelry!)

Hello everyone! Summer is here, and I love how the sunshine and warm weather give us even more reasons to show off our favorite jewelry.

But as much as I enjoy a day at the beach or lounging by the pool with my sparkle on, I also know summer activities can be tough on our gems and metals.

Did you know that chemicals in sunscreen and even chlorine in pools can damage fine jewelry? It’s true – experts warn that everyday products like lotion or perfume can discolor delicate gemstones, and chlorinated pool water can corrode gold alloys. Don’t worry, though – with a few smart habits (and a little help from your friendly jewelers 😉), you can protect your treasures from sun, sand, and surf.

I’ve gathered my top summer jewelry care tips (with some help from the pros at AGS and GIA) to keep your pieces safe and sparkling all season long. Let’s dive in!

Sun & Heat: Keep Your Gems Cool

We all love a little sunshine, but too much direct sun or heat can hurt certain gemstones. Just as UV rays can damage our skin, prolonged sunlight can fade or discolor some gems. For instance, amethyst, kunzite, and topaz may lose vibrancy with excessive UV exposure, and organic gems like pearls can bleach under intense sunlight. High heat is also a hazard – extreme temperatures or sudden temperature changes can even cause gems to fracture or dry out pearls and opals, robbing them of their color and luster.  The last thing we want is a dull diamond or a cracked opal from a sunbathing session!

Summer Care Tips – Sun & Heat: To protect your jewelry from sun damage, avoid leaving it baking in direct sunlight. Don’t store or leave jewelry on a windowsill or in a hot car (the inside of a parked car can heat up super quickly on a sunny day!). If you’re lounging at the beach or pool, keep a soft pouch handy – when I take off my rings to apply sunscreen or go for a swim, they go straight into a little pouch in my bag (kept in the shade). At home, store jewelry in a cool, dry place out of direct light. Your jewelry box or a drawer is much better than leaving pieces out on a dresser in the sun. By keeping your gems cool and away from harsh UV rays, you’ll prevent the unwelcome fading or drying that summer weather can cause.

Sand & Saltwater: Beach Day Hazards

Nothing says summer is like a trip to the beach! However, sand and saltwater can be rough on jewelry. Sand might feel soft under our toes, but those tiny grains are abrasive to metals and even some harder stones. Gritty sand can scratch precious metal settings and sneak into ring prongs or necklace clasps – which is a pain to clean out later. And if you’re planning a beach volleyball game or building sandcastles with the kids, consider leaving your cherished pieces safely at home (I’d hate to look down and realize a diamond fell out in the sand!).

Saltwater is another element to watch out for. The ocean’s salt and minerals can dull the polish of gemstones and accelerate tarnish on certain metals. Sterling silver is prone to tarnishing faster with exposure to salt (and even our sweat). Gold and other alloys aren’t immune either – salt can creep into tiny crevices and cause corrosion over time. Chlorine, found in many pools and hot tubs, deserves its own caution: it can weaken gold alloys and eat away at the finish of your jewelry, so always rinse jewelry that does accidentally get exposed to chlorinated water. In fact, fine jewelry should be removed before diving into a chlorinated pool or using any household cleaners with harsh chemicals (bonus tip: many cleaning products contain ammonia or bleach that can be too harsh for delicate gems and metals).

Summer Care Tips – Beach & Pool: I recommend leaving fine jewelry at home or in a secure spot if you’re swimming in the ocean or playing in the sand. Enjoying the waves? Opt for fun costume jewelry that you won’t worry about. If you do wear rings or bracelets near the water, be extra cautious – cold water can shrink our fingers a tad, making rings looser and easier to slip off in the ocean (yikes!). For pool days, always take off jewelry before cannonballing in. I actually have a little ring dish I keep in my beach bag and another by the pool at home – that way I have a designated safe spot for rings and earrings when I need to remove them. After any beach day, gently rinse off any pieces that were exposed to salt air or sand and pat them dry. Your jewelry will thank you for the refreshing bath after its day at the beach!

Sunscreen & Lotions: Friend and Foe

Sticky summer situations aren’t just about water and sand – sunscreens, lotions, and even sweat can also cause trouble for your rings and necklaces. We all need sunscreen (please wear yours!), but apply lotions and sprays before you put on your jewelry. Sunscreen, tanning oil, and insect repellent can create a film on gemstones and metal, dulling their sparkle. The American Gem Society cautions that chemicals in sunscreen can be harsh on precious metals and stones. The good news is you don’t have to choose between sun protection and shining jewelry – you just need the right order for your routine.

Summer Care Tips – Lotions & Potions: Always apply sunscreen, lotions, perfume, and hairspray first, let everything fully dry or absorb into your skin, and only then put on your jewelry. This simple switcheroo prevents residue buildup on your jewels. If your jewelry does get lotion on it, wipe it down with a clean, soft cloth at the end of the day. And remember to take off jewelry before a serious sweat session (gym time, yard work, etc.) – not only can sweat dull your pieces, but you also risk banging them on equipment or tools. A quick wipe with a soft cloth after wear can remove any sweat or oils and keep your pieces clean.

Safe Summer Storage & Travel Tips

When you’re not wearing your jewelry – especially during travel or active outings – proper storage is key. Summer’s heat and humidity can encourage tarnish, so you want to store pieces carefully. Use soft, fabric-lined jewelry boxes or travel cases with separate compartments so items don’t tangle or scratch each other. Humidity control helps too: consider tossing a small silica gel packet in your jewelry box if you live in a humid area or use anti-tarnish strips for silver pieces.

If summer travels are on the agenda, plan ahead for how to carry your jewelry. I like to use a dedicated travel jewelry organizer: it keeps necklaces untangled, earrings paired, and everything cushioned. Never jumble your nice jewelry loose in a suitcase pocket – that’s asking for scratches or lost items. And if you’re flying, keep jewelry in your carry-on, not checked luggage, for security and peace of mind. (Insider tip: pack a small zip-lock bag or pouch in your beach bag; if you end up needing to take off your jewelry—say, for a spontaneous volleyball game or swim—you have a safe place to put it. By thinking ahead, you can enjoy your vacation and your jewelry without worrying.

Insurance Insights: Traveling with your precious jewelry? Make sure it’s properly insured. Many people don’t realize that typical homeowners or renters' insurance policies may not fully cover fine jewelry – often those policies only cover theft or fire, and even then, with low limits that might not replace a high-value piece. And accidents happen beyond theft: if you drop your diamond stud down a sink drain or chip a gemstone on a marble countertop, standard insurance might not help. For true peace of mind, consider specialty jewelry insurance (like coverage from Jewelers Mutual Group). These policies can cover loss, damage, mysterious disappearance, and more. It’s relatively affordable (often 1–2% of the item’s value per year) and can save you a lot of heartache. So before you jet off on that dream vacation, double-check your coverage and update any appraisals if needed (more on appraisals below!).

Cleaning & Maintenance: Preserve that Shine

Summer fun can mean extra buildup on your jewelry – think sunscreen residue, sand, sweat, and general grime from outdoor activities. Regular cleaning will keep your gems sparkling and also ensure sunscreen or salt doesn’t linger and cause long-term issues. At-home cleaning is easy for most pieces: a bowl of warm water with a few drops of mild dish soap makes a nice bath for diamond, gold, and sapphire jewelry. Let them soak for a few minutes, then gently scrub crevices with a soft toothbrush, rinse, and pat dry with a lint-free cloth. (Avoid soaking pearls or very delicate antique pieces – those should just be wiped with a damp cloth, as pearls and silk threads can be weakened by water.) For silver jewelry, a silver polishing cloth works wonders to remove tarnish and restore shine.

Even with good home care, nothing beats periodic professional cleaning and inspection now and then. In fact, experts recommend scheduling regular professional cleanings and inspections to keep your jewelry in pristine condition. Just like you’d take your car in for service, bringing your jewelry to a professional jeweler every so often means they’ll safely deep-clean it (ultrasonic or steam cleaners can blast away dirt in settings) and, importantly, check for any wear or loose stones. A jeweler might catch a loose prong or a worn clasp before it turns into a lost gemstone disaster. We typically suggest coming in for a check-up every 6 months to a year, and especially after a season like summer if your jewelry saw a lot of action (sand, sun, and sunscreen, oh my!). Your rings, necklaces, and bracelets will thank you for the spa day, and you’ll love how like new they look after a professional polish.

When to Get Jewelry Appraisals

Besides cleaning, let’s talk appraisals for a sec. A jewelry appraisal is basically a professional document stating what your piece is worth, which is crucial for insurance. When should you get an appraisal? Any time you have a new piece of significant value, you should have it appraised for insurance coverage (most insurers require an appraisal to issue a policy or rider for the item). Also, if you’ve inherited or been gifted a heirloom, it’s wise to get an appraisal to know its value and insurance. But appraisals aren’t a one-and-done kind of thing – jewelry values fluctuate over time with market prices of gold, platinum, diamonds, etc. The older an appraisal is, the less accurate it might be. In fact, insurance companies and appraisers recommend updating your jewelry appraisals about every 2-3 years. That way, if your piece has gone up in value, you’re not under-insured, or if values have dipped, you’re not overpaying premiums. For example, the price of gold today might be quite different from five years ago; an updated appraisal ensures your insurance reflects the current replacement cost of your item.

At Hauser’s, we have Certified Gemologists who can provide appraisal services. If it’s been a few years since your last appraisal (or you can’t remember the last time – no judgment!), it might be time to schedule an update. Generally, I tell clients: every two years or after any major change (like you got a ring re-set, added more diamonds, or there was a big jump in metal prices) is a good rule of thumb for appraisals. This keeps your insurance up to date and gives you peace of mind that your jewelry is properly protected.

Introducing Hauser’s Summer Camp for Jewelry

Okay, so you’ve heard me talk about all the things to watch out for in summer. You might be thinking, “That’s a lot to keep track of when I just want to relax on vacation!” Trust me, I get it. This is where Hauser’s Summer Camp for Jewelry comes to the rescue! Think of it as summer camp, but for your rings, watches, and heirlooms – a fun little retreat where your jewelry gets pampered while you’re away on your retreat.

Here’s how it works: Going out of town for a week or two? Bring your precious pieces to us before you leave. While you’re off making memories (sipping lemonade on the beach or exploring a new city), we’ll be giving your jewelry the VIP treatment back home. Our Summer Camp services include:

  • Professional Jewelry Cleaning: We’ll give your items a thorough cleaning and polishing so they regain their full sparkle. No sunscreen gunk or sand grit will survive our cleaning process! Your jewelry will be dazzling by the time you return. (Regular cleaning isn’t just cosmetic – it can prevent long-term damage and keep gemstones secure, so it’s a win-win.)

  • Expert Inspections & Repairs: While your pieces are with us, our expert goldsmiths and gemologists will inspect each item for any signs of wear. If we spot loose stones, worn prongs, or a clasp that’s seen better days, we can fix it up for you. It’s like giving your jewelry a health check and any needed TLC. Better to address that loose diamond now than to risk it falling out at the pool party later! We handle all kinds of jewelry repairs on-site – from resizing rings to re-tipping prongs to replacing watch batteries. You’ll get your beloved items back in tip-top shape, ready to wear with confidence.

  • Appraisal Updates: Have a ring or watch that hasn’t been appraised in a while? Let us take care of that during Summer Camp. We’ll perform appraisals on pieces you plan to insure or update valuations on. Remember, keeping appraisals up to date (every few years) is important for insurance. We’ll provide you with documentation for your records and insurer, so you’re all set. No need to worry about the paperwork – we’ve got you covered.

  • Safe Keeping: Lastly, perhaps the biggest benefit of our Summer Camp – peace of mind. Your treasures will be safely stored in our secure vault while you’re away. So you don’t have to stress about leaving the jewelry at home unattended or (gasp!) traveling with it and possibly losing it. Enjoy your vacation knowing your valuables are in good hands, being cared for by people who love jewelry as much as you do.

When you’re back from vacation, swing by Hauser’s to pick up your refreshed jewelry. We’ll reunite you with your sparkling-clean, inspected, (and maybe newly appraised) pieces – kind of like picking up the kids from camp, except these campers will come home shiny 😉.

We’re Here for You, All Summer Long

I hope these tips help you feel confident about caring for your jewelry during the summer months. After all, our precious pieces are meant to be enjoyed – we just must give them a little extra love and protection when the days are long and hot. And remember, you’re not alone in this! At Hauser’s Jewelers, we love spoiling your jewelry and keeping it looking its best. Whether you need a quick cleaning, repair, or have questions about insurance and appraisals, we’re here to help.
